PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (3-2-3) fell, 2-0, on Sunday night at Providence (5-4-0). Junior keeper, and Bridgewater, Mass. native,
Julia Schneider recorded seven saves in the loss.
"We knew it was going to be tough going into their place," explained Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "Providence has been together for a few years and have had time to mesh, and we are still learning each other. With that said, we got scored on a deep cross and a corner kick. I liked that we fought hard and grew tighter as a group. This game was good experience for the team. We are proud of what we have done so far and will build off this."
The Friars got off to a quick start and set the tempo early with Schneider fending off three shots and two corners in the first 17 minutes of the contest.
Junior captain
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) recorded the first shot for the River Hawks in the 25th minute when her header in the box went wide.
Providence took the lead in the 26th minute when a cross into the box found the head of Casey Estey and her shot dribbled past the keeper and just across the goal line.
Schneider would make two more saves, including one as the first half expired to keep the game within reach.
In the 60th minute, senior defender
Alex Guzman headed away a shot destined for the back fo the net that got past an aggressive Schneider to keep the deficit at one.
The Friars would capitalize on a corner kick in the 76th minute off of a header from Hannah McNulty.
The Plaistow, N.H. native would get the first shot on goal for the River Hawks in the 83rd minute, but the Friar keeper was alert and there to make her first and only save of the contest.
The River Hawks would get a final chance in the 90th minute with a corner kick opportunity, but it was cleared by the Friar defense.
The Friars held a 15-2 shots advantage and a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
