LOWELL, Mass. – Rachel Morrier scored twice in Thursday night's matchup against Seton Hall to give the River Hawks a 3-1 win at Cushing Field. UMass Lowell improves to 3-1-3, while the Pirates fall to 0-5-2.
"We showed a lot of character to bounce back after they equalized," commented Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "Rachel [Morrier] scored two great goals and for Dre [
Andrea Morrow] to get on the board again is great. I thought they [Seton Hall] were a tough team. They made it difficult, they pressed high, they tried to play, and we countered that intensity."
A native of Plaistow, N.H., Morrier opened the scoring for both sides in the second minute of the game. Receiving the ball at midfield, the junior captain dribbled past two Pirate defenders into a one-on-one with the keeper and placed a beautiful ball into the bottom left hand side of the net to put the home team up 1-0 early.
The Pirates would come right back taking the next three shots, but junior keeper
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) was there to stop the two on goal.
Freshman
Veronica Morrier would get the only other shot on goal for the River Hawks in the first half, putting a rocket on goal at point blank distance that the Seton Hall keeper made a diving save to keep the home team with one goal in the first half.
Schneider would end the first half with six saves, making it seven straight games to start the season without allowing a goal in the first half.
The River Hawk defense held strong the 35 minutes of the second, allowing only one shot on goal that was gobbled up by the junior captain.
In the 81st minute, the Pirates tied the game up off a corner that was flicked on by Lauren Dao, and Julia Stirpe put the ball in the back of the net.
Only three minutes later, and the River Hawks would retake the lead for good off a throw in from senior
Andrea Morrow. Her throw went into the left side of the box, but was headed out, but back to the freshman forward
Kristin Birgisdottir who found a streaking Morrow. Morrow would put a shot on goal just outside the box that found the back of the net.
In the 88th minute,
Rachel Morrier would receive a beautiful ball from senior
Shannon Groffie that slipped past the Seton Hall defense. Rachel would go one-on-one with the goalie, and find the bottom right of the goal to give the River Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Schneider would finish with seven saves, while Seton Hall's Anna MacLean stopped four shots.
UMass Lowell lead in corner kicks, 5-3, while Seton Hall had a 13-11 shot advantage.
