LOWELL, Mass. – Rising senior
Cory Highfield (Georgetown, Ontario) was a member of the Six Nations Arrows team that won the 2017 Minto Cup last night by an 8-3 score against the Coquitlam Adanacs in a best-of-five three-game series sweep.
Highfield played against team and fellow rising senior
Keenan Koswin (Winnipeg, Manitoba), who was playing for Coquitlam. Highfield notched two assists in last night's series clinching win and notched a total of eight points (1g,2a) in the Finals series.
"I'm thrilled that Keenan and Cory made it to the Minto Cup Finals, and for all of our student-athletes that played in their respective provincial championships," said Head Coach
Ed Stephenson. "The Minto Cup is like the Super Bowl of box lacrosse for Junior A athletes, and the competition is fierce. This is an experience these guys will remember throughout their lives and will be beneficial as they begin their senior year in NCAA field lacrosse."
It marks the second summer that UMass Lowell lacrosse players have competed in the tournament.
The Minto Cup Championship is comprised of four teams, the top team from Vancouver and Alberta, and two from the host province of Ontario. There are 21 Jr. A teams from across Canada, eight from British Columbia, eight from Ontario, and five from Alberta that compete to earn a spot annually in the Minto Cup.
"The main thing that stuck out to me is that we had a group of guys so committed to excellence we could not settle for anything less," said Highfield. "My time with the arrows was amazing and we became a family almost immediately. We all had a common goal in mind and that was to win the Minto Cup."
Rising senior and attackman
Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alberta) is also playing for a championship over the summer for the Mann Cup in the Sr. A post-season with the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
