VESTAL, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (22-21, 10-9) suffered its first conference doubleheader sweep of the season, as the Binghamton Bearcats (24-9, 11-2) connected on seven home runs on the day leading to wins of 6-2 and 6-5, including a walk-off victory in game two.
Â
With one out and a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh in the second contest, Brendan Skidmore ripped a single up the middle to complete the sweep for the hosts.
Â
The River Hawks trailed 5-2 entering the top of the sixth before
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) delivered the key hit for the guests; connecting on a two-run single in the sixth to knot the game up at 5-5.
Â
With two walks sandwiched around a double to load the bases,
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) scored Passatempo with a groud out to cut into the deficit and set the stage for Barry.
Â
UMass Lowell began game two with a Passtempo two-run shot to left in the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Â
Behind back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first, the Bearcats scored three times to erase the deficit and move in front 3-2. Another home run in the fourth extended the Binghamton lead to 5-2.
Â
The Bearcats scored in four consecutive innings to take game one, 6-2, despite getting outhit by the River Hawks. Binghamton didn't get a hit until the third inning, but it was a CJ Krowiak two-run home run to left to open the scoring. Justin Drpich connected on a solo shot in the fourth to open up a 3-0 advantage.
Â
In the fifth, the hosts pushed a run across following two UMass Lowell errors and a fielder's choice. After being held scoreless in the sixth, the Bearcats added their fifth run on Krowiak's second homer on the day to take a 5-0 lead after seven.
Â
The River Hawks were able to get two on the board in the eighth inning behind
Steve Passatempo's (Medford, Mass.) RBI double off the wall in left.
Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) led off the frame with a single and Passatempo came within inches of a home run but his ball hit the top of the wall.
Â
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) recorded his second hit of the contest to move Passatempo over to third, and he came around to score a double play.
Â
Drpich added his second long ball in the eighth to get a run back for the Bearcats.
Â
Binghamton's starter Nick Gallagher struck out eight batters through six innings to pick up the win, while
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) picked up three strikeouts in 6.2 frames.
