ORONO, Maine -- The UMass Lowell baseball team (22-26, 10-13) fell in the finale game of the 2017 campaign, having its comeback come up short in an 8-4 loss to the Maine Black Bears (20-24, 7-10) on Saturday.
The hosts took a 6-0 lead after two innings, with the big hit coming by way of a Tyler Schwanz three-run home run in the second to cap off the early scoring.
UMass Lowell got on the board in the third inning, scoring twice behind a Ben PRada (Laurel, Md.) RBI single and a balk with Prada standing on third. The frame began with singles from
John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) and
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.), before a double play had Polichetti standing at third for Prada. Following the junior's single to right,
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) doubled to set up the miscue on the mound.Â
After the Black Bears added a run in the fifth, the River Hawks scored a pair in the eighth on a
Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) RBI single and a Polichetti double play that scored
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Young and Barry led the UMass Lowell lineup with two hits apiece, while a trio of Maine players had two hits and Schwanz drove in three.
The River Hawks won a DI program-high 22 games on the year.Â
