NEW HAVEN, Conn. --
The UMass Lowell baseball team (22-23) dropped its final non-conference tilt of 2017, 4-2, to the Yale Bulldogs (28-16) Wednesday night at Yale Field.

The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) was on second for Cam Climo's RBI single, following a single of his own and a wild pitch. In the bottom of the first, Maiola threw out a Bulldog runner advancing to third and led off the next frame with his hit.

Yale responded with all four runs in the third, with a Griffin Dey two-run double capping off the frame. The Bulldogs rallied for three two-out runs and hold a three-run advantage after three complete innings.

UMass Lowell climbed within 4-3 after scoring a pair with two outs in the top of the eighth on five hits. Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) began the rally with a one-out single and stole second before the second out. Led by Michael Young's (Chester, N.J.) RBI single, the guests ripped off three consecutive singles, with Young scoring the third run on Maiola's single.

Trying to complete the rally, the River Hawks were able to load the bases in the eighth and had the tying run on third with one out in the ninth, but could not come up with the key hit.

Maiola and Climo combined for five of the eight UMass Lowell hits, while Steve Xirinachs (San Diego, Calif.) struck out five batters in four innings. Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) faced four batters and struck out three.

The River Hawks wrap up 2017 with a three-game set at Maine. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon on May 12 and a single game at 4 p.m. on May 13.
