LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team wraps up the home portion of the schedule with a matchup against BC on Senior Night, before heading back out on the road for the River Hawks' final two America East series of the season. This weekend UMass Lowell heads to New York to face the first-place Binghamton Bearcats in a three-game set.
River Hawk Rewind
The River Hawks went 3-2 last week, including a record-setting 20-1 win against Hartford on April 29, and their first walk-off win of the season to take the series with the 3-2 victory on Sunday.
John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) was the hero in the finale with his pinch-hit two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. On the week,
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) and
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) both homered and drove in five runs, combining for nine runs scored as well.
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) set a DI program record with three doubles in a single game, and finished the week with seven hits, three RBI, five runs and a triple with four two-baggers.
Leading the Flock
Maiola sits atop the lineup with a .348 batting average, 49 hits and his 35 RBI, while he's second with 31 runs, two triples and six homers.
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) leads the team with 35 runs, seven long balls and 89 total bases, while the sophomore's 16 doubles lead the conference and are the sixth-most in all of Division I. Sharpe has tripled four times and posts a .685 slugging percentage with 25 RBI as well. On the hill,
Collin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) and
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) lead the team with five wins apiece. Duffley's two complete games, 64 strikeouts and his 2.12 ERA sit atop the pitching staff, while
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has a team-high six saves. As a team, the River Hawks are batting .264 and the staff is posting a 3.65 ERA.
Scouting Boston College
The Eagles (17-24, 7-17 ACC) lost two out of three to the Miami Hurricanes over the weekend, but took the finale 9-2 to enter the matchup on a winning note. Jake Alu leads the offense with a .328 batting average, while Gian Martellni has driven in a team-high 32 runs behind four home runs and 11 doubles to pace the Eagles in all three categories. On the mound, Jack Nelson is 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA, while Jacob Stevens has 54 strikeouts. BC is batting .249 with a 5.29 ERA.
Scouting Binghamton
The Bearcats (22-9, 9-2 AE) have won six conference games in a row, and are coming off a 2-1 weekend against CCSU. Paul Rufo sits atop the lineup with a .347 average and 19 RBI, while Brendan Skidmore has connected on four home runs. The staff is led by Nick Gallagher's six wins, 1.57 ERA and 42 strikeouts. Binghamton is batting .277 and the pitchers are posting a 3.09 ERA.
Series History

The River Hawks hold a 10-6 advantage in the all-time series against Binghamton, as the team's split their doubleheader earlier in the season.
Record Setters...Part Deux
The 20 runs against Hartford on April 29 was the most UMass Lowell has scored since joining Division I in 2013, surpassing the previous high of 18 against UAlbany earlier in April. The River Hawks' 22 hits were also a program DI record. The River Hawks' 10 runs in the ninth inning in the UAlbany contest marked the most runs the team has scored in an inning since 2013, passing the seven runs in 15-1 game at UMBC.
Mai, oh Mai
Colby Maiola leads the team with 11 multi-RBI games and 14-multi hit games as well. The left fielder leads the team with his current seven-game hitting and eight-game on-base streak. The junior college transfer has connected on the team's only grand slam this season and is third on the team with 18 extra-base hits.
Power Surge
Through 40 games, this year's offense has connected on 35 home runs and have delivered multiple home runs in nine games, including a DI program-high four on February 25 against FDU, to lead the conference in total homers. Last season, the River Hawks hit 23 homers with four multi-home run games.
