LOWELL, Mass. –  The UMass Lowell baseball team (14-12, 5-3) set a DI program high with 18 runs in a single game, as the River Hawks took the series with an 18-0 win in game three against the UAlbany Great Danes (10-13, 3-6) on Sunday afternoon.
Â
UMass Lowell led 8-0 heading into the top of the ninth, but was able to score 10 runs in the frame to set the record.
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.),
John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) and Steve PAssatempo (Medford, Mass.) all had RBI singles in the inning, before
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) hit a three-run shot to right to cap the scoring.
Â
The trio of Climo,
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) and
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) led the lineup with three hits, while Maiola and Climo drove in three runs apiece. Olive also led the team with three runs, and
Ted Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) picked up his first career hit as a pinch hitter in the eighth.
UMass Lowell's previous Division I single-game scoring mark was set in the 15-1 win at UMBC on April 26, 2014.Â
Â
The River Hawks opened up a 3-0 after two innings, and forced a UAlbany pitching change after Olive led off the second with a double to right. The sophomore scored the third UMass Lowell run on Prada's bloop single that dropped in front of the third baseman and shortstop in left.
Â
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) began the game with a double down the left field line and scored on a Passatempo single to open the scoring.
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) made it 2-0 on his fielder's choice that brought home
Oscar Marchena (Miami. Fla.)
Â
The River Hawks tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth on a towering home run to right field from Olive, scoring Climo after he singled. Climo drove in UMass Lowell's eighth run with a double off the wall in left to score Young, following the redshirt-freshman's RBI single sent Maiola home.
Â
UMass Lowell starter
Steve Xirinachs (San Diego, Calif.) recorded six strikeouts through his five shutout innings, including three in the second inning to escape a jam. The senior scattered five hits and only allowed two runners to advance into scoring position.
Â
The Great Danes' Evan Harasta recorded three of his team's six hits.Â
Â
The River Hawks are back in action on April 11 at Dartmouth for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest in Hanover.
