LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (21-18, 9-7) picked up an America East doubleheader split with the Hartford Hawks (16=20, 7-7) on Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. The River Hawks slugged their way to a 20-1 victory in game one, before the Hawks battled to a 5-1 win in game two.
Â
For the second time this season, the River Hawks set the program DI scoring mark, surpassing their 18 runs against UAlbany in early April. The lineup also recorded 22 base knocks, another program mark at the DI level.
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) drove in five on the day, and
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) picked up four RBI, as well.
Â
UMass Lowell took control of game one with a nine-run second inning to build a 10-0 after the first two frames. Following back-to-back hits to begin the first,
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) picked up a RBI on a grounder to second, scoring
Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) to put UMass Lowell on top 1-0.
Â
The first five batters in the second reached for the River Hawks on four hits and a hit-by-pitch, with
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) driving in the second run after getting hit. Following a Marchena single and
Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) sacrifice fly, the hosts lead 4-0 and quickly added three runs on three consecutive RBI singles from Passatempo Maiola and Climo.
Â
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) tripled to center to score Climo and Maiola, before
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) capped the inning with a double to score Olive, opening a 10-0 cushion.
Â
UMass Lowell added five runs in the third, with three runs scoring on Climo's three-run homer over the wall in left.
Michael Young led off the frame with a walk and crossed the plate on Passatempo's double to left center. After a Maiola walk, Climo stepped to the plate and connected on his fifth longball of the season.
Â
Marchena recorded his second RBI of the day with a single off the second base bag to score Olive for the River Hawks' 15th run of the game.
Â
After Maiola scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, Passatempo hit a three-run homer to left to set the new DI scoring mark, opening a 19-0 advantage. Later in the frame, Olive singled up the middle to score Climo for the 20-0 buffer.
Â
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) baffled the Hawks lineup, striking out six in eight innings, and scattering three hits.
Â
In game two, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead off a RBI single and bases-loaded walk in the fourth and fifth innings, before Prada cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth. The junior picked up a RBI on a single following walks by Olive and Barry.
Â
Hartford scored three times in the seventh and after a UMass Lowell rally, Seth Pinkerton came in to earn the one-out save to secure the win.
Â
Both teams will take the field for the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
