River Hawks close out season at NJIT on Saturday

UMass Lowell will finish its third Div. I season at noon in Newark, N.J.

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: UMass Lowell enters Saturday's season finale with a 3-12 overall mark (1-5 AE), after a 12-11 overtime loss against Stony Brook last Saturday at Cushing Field Complex to close out its America East schedule. Matt Balter (Albany, N.Y.), Daniel Cozzi (Reading, Mass.), Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) and Austin Lane (Aurora, Ont.) each tallied two goals in the losing effort. Sophomore goalie Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) stopped nine shots in his 15th start of the season for the River Hawks. 

Junior attackman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.) leads the team with 37 points and 21 assists, while Phillips' 23 goals paces the UMass Lowell offense. Lane's 21 goals rank second on the River Hawk roster. Junior midfielder Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) has amassed a team-best 59 ground balls and 27 caused turnovers. Lardieri has started all 15 games in goal for the River Hawks, posting a 12.01 GAA and .494 save percentage. He has amassed 10 saves in six contests this season.

The River Hawks have scored seven or more goals in 12 of 15 contests this season. UMass Lowell owns a 2-5 record on the road this season in seven road contests. 

UMass Lowell as a team leads America East with 35.53 ground balls per game and rank second among conference teams with 7.67 caused turnovers per game. The River Hawks also lead AE with 8.33 caused turnovers per game in six conference games. UMass Lowell's 36.80 shots per game ranks second among America East squads.

SCOUTING NJIT: The Highlanders enter Saturday with a 1-13 overall mark, which includes their most recent game, which was a 9-4 loss at Manhattan on Saturday. NJIT owns an 0-5 record at home so far this season. Nick Marzullo totaled 14 stops in the losing effort in net for NJIT. Aaron Forster leads the team with 42 points and 33 goals in 14 contests for NJIT. Marzullo has started 10 of 14 games for NJIT posting a 12.39 GAA and .527 save percentage.

THOUGHTS FROM STEPHENSON ON THE FINAL GAME: "We are excited for the last game of the year, trying to improve again, this has been a critical year for us in our progression,"said Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "Next year we are NCAA eligible, so we are looking to finish off the season on a very high note. We have seen some young guys move into the picture, this is what you expect where some younger guys are starting to get physically more mature for this top level and we are starting to see that now, seeing some new faces and we are excited about that."

AMERICA EAST LEADERS: Sean Tyrrell's 1.40 assists per game ranks seventh among America East players, while Austin Lane's 5.7 shots per game is seventh best in the conference. Will Puduski's 3.93 ground balls per game rank fifth in the league. Grant Lardieri's (Ada, Mich.) 156 saves leads America East and his 10.40 saves per game is tied for third best among conference netminders.
