STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Senior
Alisha Welch (Langley, British Columbia) batted .667 (2-3) with one RBI to lead the UMass Lowell softball team (18-18, 9-4 AE) to a 3-1 victory in the final game of a three-game, America East Conference series at Stony Brook (11-24, 6-7 AE) on Sunday.
Â
With two wins this weekend, the River Hawks have won their first ever conference series against the Seawolves and four straight against America East opponents this season.
Â
"This was another great weekend for us," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "I am so proud of how they are playing right now. This upcoming week will be a big test for us."
Â
Junior
Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) also posted two hits on the day, while senior
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman
Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) each chipped in with a RBI in the contest. Senior pitcher
Lauren Ramirez (Dracut, Mass.) hurled all seven innings to improve to 8-8 in 2017.
Â
Both teams left one runner on in the first inning of game three, including Welch, who logged the first hit of the game for either side. The River Hawks were able to get on the board in the second, though, loading the bases before T. Alcorn was hit by a pitch and Welch singled to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
Â
The Seawolves answered in the bottom of the inning, cutting the difference in half with a two-out RBI by Sami Duffy. Sophomore
Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) and Katelyn Corr each logged a hit for their respective teams in the third, but the River Hawks would hold onto the 2-1 edge.
Â
SBU then made noise in the fourth, using a wild pitch to move a pair of runners into scoring position, although UMass Lowell was able to extinguish the opportunity.
Â
The defense continued to control of the pace of play in the next two innings, as both squads combined for just two hits. UMass Lowell would add an insurance run in the seventh, however, when Cashman put a ball in play with the bases loaded, giving the team its 3-1 margin of victory.
Â
The all-time series between UMass Lowell and Stony Brook is now knotted at 10-10. The River Hawks will now make the trek to Maine to wrap up that series for this year with a single game on Wednesday, April 26.
