River Hawks Falter in Series Finale, Fall 4-1 to Stony Brook

Box Score (PDF) | Highlights | Postgame Interview

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell baseball team (18-13, 7-4) fell in the series finale, 4-1, against the Stony Brook Seawolves (17-16, 5-4) on Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

The hosts clinched the series with the doubleheader sweep on Friday, securing their third consecutive America East series win.

"We just didn't swing the bats and get the key hits like we did yesterday," commented Head Coach Ken Harring. "I thought we pitched well enough to win and it's just one of the games where we didn't do enough to win, and that was the story of the day. Winning the series is the most important thing and it would have been nice to end it with a win, but if we keep winning series good things will happen."

The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, courtesy of a two-out double to right off the bat of Bobby Honeyman.

UMass Lowell knotted up the game in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single to right from Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.). Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) reached first on an error at shortstop, and moved to third on an Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) single.

Stony Brook came back in the top of the fourth to score two runs and retake the lead at 3-1. A double to left by Michael Wilson made it 2-1, and the third run crossed the plate on Sean Buckhout's infield single. The guests scored for the third inning in a row with a solo home run to left from Dylan Resk opened a 4-1 buffer.

The River Hawks had runners reach base in four of the last six innings, but could not cut into the deficit. Nick Kuzia (Seymour, Conn.) pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts.

Honeyman and Andruw Gazzola each went 3-for-5 for the visitors in the effort.

UMass Lowell will return to LeLacheur Park for a non-conference doubleheader with Brown on Tuesday, April 18. Game one will begin at 3 p.m.
