RALEIGH, N.C. – The UMass Lowell (4-6) baseball team fell to No. 6 NC State (6-5), 8-0, in the USA Baseball-Irish Classic finale on Sunday afternoon.
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) recorded two hits and
Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) reached base twice with a single and a walk.
"Their freshman pitcher did a great job limiting us, and I don't think we had a leadoff guy on all day," said Head Coach
Ken Harring. "He set the tone and did a really jood job not letting us get anything going. They pieced together a few runs there in the middle innings and we just couldn't stop the bleeding."
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) struck out four through the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the third following a bunt single to lead off the frame by Brock Deathrage, who later scored on a double by Stephen Pitarra. A sacrifice fly capped off the Wolfpack inning and the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the fourth.
NC State added three more runs in the fourth with a two-run double and an error, along with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Dalton Feeney picked up the win for the Wolfpack, improving to 2-0 on the season.
The River Hawks are back in action with a three-game series at Fordham from March 11-13.
