ORONO, Maine – The UMass Lowell (12-10, 3-1) baseball team completed its first America East doubleheader sweep since 2015 with a pair of wins against the Maine Black Bears (6-15, 0-2) on Friday at Mahaney Diamond. The River Hawks took game one, 4-3, and silenced the Black Bears' bats in the 3-0 win in game two.
Â
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) and
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) both homered in each contest, and
Collin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) struck out a career-high 10 batters in his complete game shutout in the nightcap. The sophomore became the second played in the program's DI era to record 10 strikeouts in a game, matching
Andrew Ryan's performance last season.
"It was an awesome day," remarked Head Coach
Ken Harring. "The guys really stepped up today and set the tone with runs in each of the first innings. Our starters controlled the day, and
Collin Duffley really had his stuff with his 10 strikeouts. The offense came up with the big hits we've been looking for and
Chris Sharpe throwing out the runner at home in game two kept momentum on our side."
Â
After Maine took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning in game one, Passatempo stepped up the plate and put the River Hawks back in front, 4-3, with a two-run shot to left field.
Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) led off the frame with a double to left, his second hit of the game and scored his second run, as well.
Â
Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season with 2.1 shutout innings, striking out three and allowing no hits.
Â
The River Hawks jumped out a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a RBI single from
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) and a
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) sacrifice fly.
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) crossed the plate of Young's single after getting hit and moving to third on Marchena's single. The shortstop stole second and came home on Maiola's fly to right.
Â
Maine knotted up the game in the third inning on Tyler Schwanz's two-run single, and took its only lead of the game on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Â
UMass Lowell starter
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) recorded six strikeouts in 5.1 innings during the first game.
Â
In game two, the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first on a balk with runners on the corners to score Passatempo. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the sixth when
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) gave UMass Lowell insurance with a two-run homer to right field.
Â
Duffley picked up his fourth win of the season, scattering three hits and striking out a least one batter in every inning except the fourth.
Â
The teams will wrap up their three-game set with the finale tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
