River Hawks Edge Bryant, 10-9, in OT For Sixth Straight Win

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) tallied a goal with 13.7 seconds remaining in overtime to complete the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team's (6-2) comeback effort and steal a 10-9 victory against Bryant (4-4) on Wednesday afternoon. With the decision, the River Hawks extend their win streak to six.

The game-winning goal came off a free position shot, as Finelli was fouled in front of the net, as extra time trickled down. The midfielder would seize the opportunity as she found open space and fired a shot hard at the target and into the back of the net.

"I am extremely proud of our girls," said Head Coach Carissa Medeiros. "This type of win is program changing for us. Bryant is an excellent team, they are physical and as soon as they stepped on the field for warm ups we could see they were an athletic and legit Division I program. They are having a great season and we knew it would be a tough game and the team knew that heart, hustle and execution were going to win this game."

With her marker at 24:08 in the second half, sophomore attack Rebecca Idson (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) set a new single season program record with 19 goals on the year. Emily Wright held the previous record with 18, set in 2015, in the program's inaugural season.

UMass Lowell produced seven different point scorers in the tilt, six of which posted multi-point efforts. Defensively, defenders Ashley Horan (Methuen, Mass.) and Megan Albertsen (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led the charge as the duo forced five and four turnovers, respectively. Additionally, Albertsen scooped up a team-high four ground balls.

Defense was the story of the first half, as neither team could find the back of the net until the 16-minute mark. Junior goalkeeper Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) racked up eight saves in the half, as the River Hawks were outshot by Bryant, 16-11.

Jess DeMeo and the Bulldogs carried a slight 4-3 edge into the half, thanks to DeMeo who notched three of the squad's four goals. Idson, sophomore midfielder Kristina Keith (East Kingston, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) tacked on a goal apiece to cut the deficit to one after 30 minutes of play. Caster netted her first career goal, with an unassisted tally, after splitting two defenders and firing one into the back of the net.

Bryant came out strong in the second half, notching back-to-back goals to extend its lead to 6-3 to mark its largest scoring margin of the tilt. DeMeo picked up her fifth and sixth goals, respectively, of the contest, just five minutes into the second frame.

The River Hawks soon stormed back, stringing together a four-goal run to eclipse their first lead of the game, 7-6, with 20:21 remaining. Junior Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) provided UMass Lowell with the one goal advantage, after connecting with sophomore attack Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.), who dished out a game-high two assists.

The two teams went on to trade goals throughout the remaining minutes of regulation. Sokol broke up a quick two-goal scoring run by Bryant to knot the game at 8-8, before Caster picked up her career-high second goal of the contest for the 9-8 lead. The Bulldogs would eventually get one back to even the score once more, 9-9, before heading into overtime.
