Solimine, Wood and Hogan Named to AE All-Academic Team

LOWELL, Mass. – Three UMass Lowell runners have been named to the America East Track and Field All-Academic Teams.  The announcement was made by the conference today.

Senior Jaclyn Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Alli Wood (Chelmsford, Mass.) were named the Women's Track and Field All-Academic Team.  Junior Paul Hogan was named to the Men's Track and Field All-Academic Team.  Each team consisted of 11 individuals.

"We had a good season in competition and this shows that we had a good season in the classroom," said Cross Country Head Coach Gary Gardner.  "These are well rounded people that bring a certain focus and attitude that carries over between the track and the classroom."

Solimine is a Mechanical Engineering major and carries a 3.88 Grade Point Average; Wood has a 3.96 GPA in Nursing.  Hogan is a Civil Engineering major with a Grade Point Average of 3.66.

Solimine is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society, Pi Tau Sigma, the mechanical Engineering Honors Society and Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honors Society.  She has, during the summer, worked as an engineering research assistant.  Solimine has been named to the All-Academic Team in both Cross Country and Track and Field in the past.

Wood has been selected to be a member of the ODK Honors Society.  She has earned recognition on the Dean's List in each of her semesters at UMass Lowell.

Hogan is an honor student and has been a regular on the Dean's List.

Although the conference honors highlight specific individuals, Gardner is quick to add that those honored are representative of the Track and Field Teams.

"They represent a team that has the same profile," said Gardner.  "They are extremely focused, one-hundred percent focused, on the track and in the classroom and these teams are very much the same."

Hogan, Solimine and Wood were key contributors to teams that turned in their strongest ever showings at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championships.  The men's team finished second, the women climbed to fifth in the nine team conference.

Hogan returning to action after missing a year of competition due to injury scored points for UMass Lowell in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter events at the America East Championships.  He also set a personal best, four-minute, 09.83-seconds in the mile at the Boston University Multi-Team Meet.

Solimine wrote her name into the UMass Lowell record book in both the 3,000 and 5,000-meters and took the America East crown in the 5,000-meters.

Wood turned a series of strong performances in a variety of middle distance events.  She was for a period of time the school's record holder in the 1,000-meters and also finished fourth in the event at the America East Indoor Championships.

The River Hawk track and field teams will return to outdoor competition, March 30, at the Colonial Relays hosted by William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
