DAVIDSON, N.C. – Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) struck out eight batters over 7.2 innings as the UMass Lowell (3-4) baseball team won its second straight with a 3-2 victory against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (1-2) in the finale of the Davidson Tournament on Sunday morning.
Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) delivered the key hit for the River Hawks with a two-run single in the fourth, scoring
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) and
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.), to put UMass Lowell up 3-0.
"This was a great team win out there today," remarked
Ken Harring. "
Andrew Ryan had complete control of the game from the beginning. Mike Young picked a great time to get his first hit of the season and drive in the eventual winning runs."
The Mountain Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the frame on a passed ball and groundout, but Ryan was able to limit the damage and cruised to his first win of the year.
Maiola scored the opening run of the game in the second after
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) reached on an error. Maiola reached base on a bunt single and stole second before moving to third on a grounder.
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season, and
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) led the River Hawks with two hits.
Jeff Shanfeldt had the best luck against Ryan, managing to record two hits and the only walk of the day from UMass Lowell pitching.
The River Hawks return to North Carolina next weekend for the USA Baseball-Irish Classic, taking on Dayton, Notre Dame and NC State.
