DAVIDSON, N.C. – The UMass Lowell (1-4) baseball team suffered a late-inning 8-5 loss to the Davidson Wildcats (3-2) in the team's opening game of the Davidson Tournament.

Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) paced the River Hawk offense with three hits and two runs. Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) delivered two hits and scored twice as well.

The Wildcats' Brian Fortier connected on a pair of three-run home runs to lead the comeback win for the hosts. Davidson jumped out a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off his first blast, following a single and a walk.

UMass Lowell answered in the top of the second with Cam Climo's (Billerica, Mass.) first career homer, a two-shot with Austin Young on first. UMass Lowell knotted the score at 3-3 in the next frame with a triple from Sharpe and a John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) RBI groundout.

Davidson threatened with runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth to force Colin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) in the game, but the sophomore was able to get the final out.

The out proved pivotal as Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) drove home Austin Young with a two-out single in the sixth to give UMass Lowell its first lead at 4-3. Young doubled to lead off the frame, and moved to third on a wild pitch with one out.

Sharpe picked up his second his extra-base hit of the contest with a double in the seventh, and crossed the plate on Austin Young's third hit to put the River Hawks in front 5-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Fortier delivered the heroics putting Davidson up for good, 6-5, with one swing of the bat.

Cody White picked up his first win of the season for the Wildcats, and Westin Whitmire held UMass Lowell at bay to earn the save.

The River Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. with a meeting against Fairleigh Dickinson. Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) is set to make his second start for UMass Lowell.
