River Hawks drop season opener to Boston University, 18-8

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team fell to Patriot League foe Boston University, 18-8 in its season opener on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex.
 
The Terriers scored the first four goals in the contest, but Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) and Cory Highfield (Georgetown, Ont.) scored two goals 13 seconds apart to close the BU lead to 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
 
BU went on to score the next six goals in the game, followed by a goal by junior attackman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.). The Terriers led at the half by a 12-3 score.
 
Freshmen Isaac Bot (Calgary, Alta.) and Brandon Beland (Granite Bay, Calif.) scored the first goals of their River Hawk careers in the second half. Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) and Austin Lane (Aurora, Ont.) also scored in the losing effort for UMass Lowell. Puduski registered a team-high five groundballs for the River Hawks.
 
Highfield notched a team-high two goals for the River Hawks, while Tyrrell finished the day with a team-high four points (1g,3a).
 
BU's Cal Dearth had a game-high six points (1g,5a) and James Burr netted the hat trick for the Terriers.
 
Sophomore goaltender Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) notched three saves in the start for the River Hawks, playing the first 25:04. Tyler Canto (Billerica, Mass.) made his collegiate debut in relief, stopping two shots and playing 32:34 of action. Christian Carson-Banister recorded 14 saves in the win for the Terriers, playing the first 45 minutes.
 
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, February 18th vs. Harvard. Game time from Cushing Field Complex is 11:45 a.m.
