HACKENSACK, N.J. – Despite a seventh straight double-double for
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) in her homecoming, the UMass Lowell women's basketball team fell, 60-51, to Fairleigh Dickinson in the finale of the four-game road swing Saturday afternoon.
Gibbs waited until the final 90 seconds to pick up her 10th and 11th points of the contest, as she finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead the River Hawks (3-7).
Paula Lopez (Leon, Spain) added nine points and a career-high six assists, while
Brianna Rudolph (Lynn, Mass.) scored all eight of hers in the second half.
The Knights (7-2) had three players in double-figures, led by Madelynn Comly's 15, while Amina Makovic and Lauren Francillion added 14 and 10, respectively.
Out the gate, FDU opened a 13-4 lead behind an 8-0 run, before
Paula Lopez (Leon, Spain) connected on a three to end the run with over three minutes remaining in the first.
The Knights scored five of the first seven points in the second period to open a 20-12 advantage with 7:28 left in the first half. Paced by four points from
Katie McKie (Austin, Texas) in the final minute, the River Hawks clawed their way back within 22-20 at the break, and ended the first half on a 16-9 run.
Linda Svenne (Riga, Lativa) gave the River Hawks their first lead of the contest, 29-28, with a three after the media timeout in the third. After a FDU basket,
Jennifer Louro (Belmar, N.J.) added a triple of her own to put the visitors on top, 32-30.
After a Lopez bucket, the Knights went on a 9-0 run to take a 41-34 in the fourth, before Louro added her second triple to make it a 41-37 contest with 8:50 remaining.
FDU responded with a 12-6 run to open a 53-43 lead with less than four minutes to play, but the River Hawks scored six straight to cut it to 53-49 as the clock showed 2:39 left in regulation.
UMass Lowell plays its first home game since November 27, when Massachusetts comes to Lowell on December 13.
