River Hawks Host Columbia Before Heading to Longwood

LOWELL, Mass. --
 The UMass Lowell women's basketball team looks to get in the win column, with a two game week as the River Hawks host Columbia before a weekend trip down to Virginia to play Longwood.

Leading the Flock
Paula Lopez (Leon, Spain) continued her hot start to the season and still paces the offense with 17.5 points per game and her five total assists. Senior Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) chipped is right behind the freshman by averaging 14.5 points, as she also leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game. On the defensive side of the ball, Cierra Stanciel (Chicago, Ill.) has recorded six steals. As a team, the River Hawks are shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from beyond the arc.

Spanish Sharpshooter
Lopez is second on the team with her 60.9 shooting percentage, and leads the squad with 14 made field goals. In her first two career games, the guard connected on 58.3 and 65.6 percent from the first two games, respectively.

Lopez Para Tres
The freshman paces the squad with her five triples and 71.4 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

So Offensive
In the season opener at Rhode Island, the River Hawks recorded more offensive rebounds (19) than defensive (16) in a single game, for the first time since the end of the 2014-15 season. Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) led the effort with five of her own.

Scouting Columbia
The Lions enter the midweek matchup at 1-1 following their 85-79 setback against Richmond on November 12. Camille Zimmerman leads the team with 23.0 points per game and three blocks, while her 7.5 rebounds is tied atop the squad. Freshman Riley Casey is adding 13.0 points per game in her first two career games. As a unit, Columbia is shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 32.7 percent from three-point range.

Scouting Longwood
The Lancers will welcome the River Hawks for their home opener as they sit at 0-2 on the young season, after falling to NC Central on Tuesday morning. Kristina Antonenko is averaging 21.0 points per game, and is supported by Autumn Childress' 11.0 ppg and 6.0 rebounds. Longwood is connecting on 27.0 percent from the field, and 13 percent from three. 

Series History
UMass Lowell is a combined 1-3 against this week's opponents, as Columbia has won two straight since the River Hawk's win in 2014 and Longwood took the first-ever meeting in 2016-17. 

Freshmen Frenzy
In each of the season's first two games, the River Hawks have had three freshman in the starting lineup with Lopez, Katie McKie (Austin, Texas) and Jennifer Louro (Belmar, N.J.) each earning a spot.

Steal Away
After the team's 13-steal performance at URi, the River Hawks added eight more against Holy Cross.

A Helping Hand
The River Hawks have recorded 21 assists in the first two games, with a season-high of 11 against Holy Cross.
