River Hawks Look to Bounce Back Against Vermont, UAlbany

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (3-4-3) steps back into conference action this week with a home tilt versus Vermont on Thursday, Oct. 5, followed by a road matchup against the reigning America East Champion UAlbany on Sunday, Oct. 8.
 
Last Time Out
The River Hawks stumbled against the Big Green of Dartmouth on Monday, October 2, falling 2-0 on the road. Sophomore keeper Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.) made four saves in her River Hawk debut. Senior Laura Gagnon (Millville, Mass.) registered a shot on goal.
 
Leading the Way
Junior captain Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) paces the team offensively for the River Hawks, scoring four goals and tallying two assists for 10 points, while also leading the way in shots (42) and shots on goal (15). Senior Andrea Morrow (West Boylston, Mass.) has two goals and four points, good for second on the team, while leading the team in game-winning goals with two. Freshman Kristin Birgisdottir (Mofsfellsbaer, Iceland) and senior Shannon Groffie (Toms River, N.J.) round out the River Hawks in points with three and one, respectively.
 
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) leads the way in net for the River Hawks. The captain has, stopped 61 shots, garnering a .859 save percentage, and carrying a 0.92 goals-against average.
 
Scouting Vermont (5-5-1, 1-1-0 AE)
The Catamounts defeated Binghamton, 2-0, to even their record in the America East on Sunday, Oct. 1. Colby Snyder and Brooke Jenkins each tallied a goal, while Coco Speckmaier made 13 saves. Jenkins leads the way for the Catamounts offensively, scoring four goals and adding two assists for nine points. Sarah Martin has tallied a team-high four assists to go along with two goals. Six different players have tallied at least one goal, while nine have tallied a point. Speckmaier carries a 1.36 goals-against average, a .826 save percentage and 71 saves on the season.
 
Series History
The Catamounts and River Hawks will meet for the fifth time in school history, with both squads holding two wins against each other.
 
Scouting UAlbany (3-9-0, 1-2-0 AE)
The Great Danes dropped a 3-0 decision at New Hampshire on Sunday, Oct. 1. They are preparing for two home games this week, first against Hartford followed by a tilt with the River Hawks. Mariah Williams leads the way offensively for UAlbany with three goals scored for three points. Caroline Kopp carries a team-high three assists on the season. Six players have scored a goal, while nine have tallied a point. Andrea Leitner has registered 36 saves, a 1.97 goals-against average, and a .667 save percentage on the season.
 
Series History
The River Hawks and Great Danes stand locked at three wins apiece along with two ties as they prepare for their ninth meeting in school history.
 
Notables
With Birgisdottir's first goal of the season against Hartford in the conference opener, the forward was named America East Rookie of the Week (9/25). The accolade was her first and the squad's first of the season. Birgisdottir was also named the River Hawk of the Week for her efforts in Sunday, Sept. 24's game against Hartford.
