ORONO, Maine -- The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (5-6-6, 2-3-3 AE) fell, 1-0, in their final game of the season to Maine (5-10-1, 3-5-0 AE). The loss knocked the squad out of contention for the final postseason berth.
"We had a good idea what we wanted to do," explained Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "Coming over here and playing on this field isn't easy, but they [Maine] had a good game plan. We were trying to do our normal plan of playing from the back and swinging it side-to-side, but they did a good job of taking us out of that. Credit to them. We are going to be a lot stronger next year when we get some key players back from injury."
In the second minute, junior captain
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) had the first scoring opportunity, taking a free kick from about 40 yards out that the Maine keeper had to tip over the crossbar.
Morrier would get another chance off a free kick in the 25th minute, but the shot hit the crossbar.
The Black Bears first good opportunity came from a shot off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, but the River Hawks keeper was able to make a great save to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
The River Hawks held the Black bears scoreless in the opening 45 minutes of play, marking the 14th time this season for the squad.
Freshman
Abigail Drezek (Cumberland, R.I.) had the first chance of the second half for either side in the 51st minute on a breakaway, but the trailing Maine defenders doubled her up and her shot dribbled into the keepers hands.
In the 68th minute, Maine was awarded a free kick about 25 yards out. The shot, which was destined for the back of the net, was tip saved by a stretched out River Hawk keeper and the resulting corner was cleared by the defense.
The River Hawks conceded a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Maine's Emilie Anderson converted the opportunity to give the Black Bears the lead.
The squad had a flurry of chances late, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Junior keeper
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Maine's Samantha Cobotic both finished with five saves in the contest.
The Black Bears finished with a 16-10 shots advantage, while corners were tied at five apiece.
