VESTAL, N.Y. – Behind two first-half scores, the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (7-5-1, 3-2-0) picked up a 2-0 road victory against the Binghamton Bearcats (5-7-4, 1-2-2) on Saturday night. The result officially clinched the program's first berth in the America East Championship.
"I thought our guys had a very good performance tonight," remarked Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "The contest had two very different looks in each half and our guys were sharp for both situations. A well deserved road win for the group against a tough Binghamton squad."
In the opening 16 minutes of the contest, the River Hawks had shots ring off the crossbar and post, with
Ivan Abramovic's (Zagreb, Croatia) attempt off the top bar in the fifth minute representing the first opportunity of the match.
UMass Lowell broke through on the scoreboard behind
Roko Prsa's first career tally in the 34th minute. The sophomore gathered
Dario Jovanovski's (Zagreb, Croatia) pass just within the penalty spot and drilled home the shot.
Under 90 seconds later,
Guilherme Rodrigues (Lowell, Mass.) sent in a shot from a tough angle that startled the Binghamton keeper and went in over his head in the far right corner. Jovanovski picked up the helper to record his fourth multi-point game of his career, all coming in 2017.
The visitors kept the pressure on in the final 45 minutes but could not add onto the advantage, as the Bearcats' second keeper of the night, Alejandro Cubillo, made four stops.
UMass Lowelll outshot the shots, 13-2, with
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) recording one save in his 33rd career win and 24th blank sheet.
The River Hawks picked up their first road win since August, and will wrap up their non-conference slate with a trip down to Providence to take on Brown on October 24 at 7 p.m.
