ORONO, Maine – Junior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) notched her squad's lone goal, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (8-9, 2-4 AE) dropped a 2-1 decision at Maine (10-4, 4-1 AE) on Friday afternoon.

"These are the hardest losses, as we played one of the most complete games from start to finish," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "A few missed opportunities resulted in this loss, but it doesn't take away from the high level of hockey we are playing right now. We will continue to tighten up some small details and look forward to playing New Hampshire on Sunday."

Huk posted a team-high four shots, including three on goal in the outing, while sophomore goalkeeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) finished the day with six saves.

The Black Bears opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play on a reverse-stick chip shot by Libby Riedl. However, the River Hawks were able to respond, converting on their first corner opportunity of the day thanks to a laser from the top of the circle by Huk in the 17th minute.

The teams combined for just three more shots in the remainder of the period, although the defense was staunch for both sides, maintaining the 1-1 tie at the break.

Coming out of halftime, it was Maine that snapped the 24-minute stalemate when Brittany Smith finished a pass from Brianna Ricker to put the home squad ahead, 2-1.

UMass Lowell threatened just minutes later, as Huk sent a shot under the Black Bears' diving keeper, but Samantha Wagg would make a defensive save on the goal line to keep her team's lead intact.

The River Hawks tested goalkeeper Emma Cochran with three more shots on goal in the next four minutes, although the home team was able to hold onto the slight, one-goal margin for the victory.

Friday's contest marked the 13th meeting between UMass Lowell and Maine in the sport of field hockey. The Black Bears now own a 12-1-1 edge in the all-time series. The River Hawks will play their final road game of the regular season on Sunday, October 22 at America East foe New Hampshire. That matchup is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
