River Hawks Entertain Binghamton in America East Home Opener

After dropping its conference opener at UAlbany, the UMass Lowell women's basketball is back on its home court, hosting the Binghamton Bearcats in the River Hawks' America East home opener.

Last Time Out
The River Hawks fell in their America East opener, 93-69, at UAlbany on Wednesday afternoon. Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) led the way with 21 points, and Markayla Sherman (Cincinnati, Ohio) set a career high with 14 points. Kayla Gibbs (Teneck, N.J.) extended her double figure scoring streak to 11 games with 12 points in the effort.

Leading the Flock
In the midst of reaching double-digits in 11 consecutive games, Kayla Gibbs leads the team with 12.4 points, and is snagging a team-high 6.6 boards per game, while Tyshay Britten (Norristown, Pa.) has a team-high 12 blocks. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) and Asia Mitchell-Owens have 32 and 31 total assists to rank atop the team, respectively. UMass Lowell is shooting at a 39.2 percent clip from the field, and connecting on 31.4 percent from three-point range.

Scouting Binghamton
The Bearcats (6-8, 1-0) knocked off UMBC, 69-62, in their AE opener on January 4, outscoring the Retrievers 16-7 in the third. A trio of players averaging double figures pace the Binghamton offense, led by Imani Watkinsí 187 points per game. Jasmine Sina and Alyssa James are chipping in 11.6 and 10.8 ppg, respectively. James is leading the team with 6.6 rebounds per game, and Watkins has recorded 47 assists and 22 blocks to rank atop the team. The Bearcats have connected on 37.7 percent of their shots from the field, and 35.3 percent from beyond the arc. 

Asia on Her Mark
In her 21-point performance at UAlbany, Asia Mitchell-Owens tied the DI mark with five threes in a single game. Megan Hendrick connected on five in the season opener, as well. There have been 10 players that have hit five threes during a single game since 2013-14. 

Trouble at the Start
The River Hawks are 0-3 in America East openers and 1-2 in home openers since joining the conference in 2013. UMass Lowell has not won a conference opener since the 2004-05 season.

Shooting 45s
For the second time this season the UMass Lowell offense shot above 45 percent from the field and from beyond the arc, recording 47.9 percent and 52.9 percent, respectively, against UAlbany. The River Hawks are 3-3 in the DI era while putting up those numbers in a single game, with two wins coming against America East foe Vermont.

Streak Ender
With the win against Colgate, UMass Lowell ended three losing steaks in the process, including picking up the programís first overtime win in Division I. The River Hawks ended a four-game skid at the Tsongas and picked up their first win against a new opponent in eight games, dating back to last season.

New Paint Job
The River Hawks scored a season-high 34 points in the paint in the win against Colgate. It marks the fifth time UMass Lowell registered more than 30 in a game this season.

Mid-game Crisis
UMass Lowell are now 2-1 in games with a halftime lead, following the win against Keene State.

50 times 5
For only the fifth time in the Division I era, the River Hawks grabbed over 50 rebounds, snagging 52 in the win against Colgate. The single-game high since 2013 is 57, set on January 18, 2015.

Free Points
For the second time this season the River Hawks connected on 20 free throws, going 20-of-34 in the win against Colgate. On December 2, the team went 20-of-22 (90.9%) from the free throw line at Columbia. That was the most free throws UMass Lowell has hit in a single game since going 21-of-26 against UMBC in 2014.

H Squared for Three!
The sharpshooting duo of Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) and Nicole Hayner have combined for 52 of UMass Lowell's 74 three-pointers, shooting 35.6 percent from beyond the arc. Hendrick's five triples at Towson were the most in a single contest since Hayner hit five last season against Maine. In 2015-16 Hayner led the team with 46 three-pointers and a 39.7 percentage. She ranked third in the America East with in percentage and fourth in triples made per game with 2.0.

Do You Even Bench?
Through 14 games, the River Hawksí reserves have scored 259 points and have outscored the opponentsí bench six times, coming off a season-high 29 against Keene State. Last season the River Hawksí bench scored 341 points, and outscored opponents 12 times. 

Notables
Hayner and Hendrick swept the America East Weekly Awards, being named Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively (12.19).
