STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell (3-15, 0-5) women's basketball team couldn't pick up a win in the road swing, as the Stony Brook Seawolves (9-8, 2-2) defended their home court with an 83-53 win on Monday afternoon.
Amanda Ortiz (Watertown, Mass.) set a career high with 16 points, while
Markayla Sherman (Cincinnati, Ohio) tied her personal best with 15, as well.
"I thought that
Kayla Gibbs was a strong leader for us from the beginning and Amanda gave us strong minutes off the bench and she's been working hard in pratice," remarked Head Coach
Jenerrie Harris. "Obviously you have to take care of the ball to beat a good team."
Five Seawolves finished the game in double figures, led by Kori Bayne-Walker's 15 and Christa Scognamiglio's 14 points. The other three in the group scored 10 apiece.
The River Hawks won the tip and took a 2-0 lead with
Kayla Gibbs' first points of the afternoon, but the Seawolves went on a 13-4 run to hold a 13-6 buffer at the first media timeout. Led by eight points from Ortiz in the quarter, including four in the last 72 seconds, the River Hawks closed out the period on 6-0 run to trim the gap to 20-16.
Stony Brook took control of the contest in the second, outscoring UMass Lowell 18-6 in the frame.
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) scored four points in the frame and
Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) converted on a pair of free throws in the final minute.
In the third quarter, Gibbs scored four points to extend her double-digit scoring streak to 15 consecutive games. UMass Lowell ended the third on a 12-4 run to enter the fourth facing a 58-42 deficit. Sherman had five in the run, including the River Hawks' first three of the contest, while Ortiz converted a three-point play for her career high.
Early in the fourth, Sherman hit another triple to bring the River Hawks within 58-45, but the visitors could not climb any closer.
UMass Lowell returns home to host Vermont at the Costello Athletic Center on January 19m tip is set for 7 p.m.
