LOWELL, Mass. – Junior midfielder
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) lifted the UMass Lowell women's soccer team to an exciting, 1-0, double overtime win against Wagner, in the 102 minute on Sunday night at Cushing Field.
Â
With the win, the River Hawks improve to 2-1-2 overall in 2016, including their second consecutive win, while the Seahawks fall to 1-5-0 on the year.
Â
"I thought our performance was the most complete performance we have had this season," said Head Coach
Joel Bancroft. "We were patient, our tempo was good, and we continued to create opportunity after opportunity. That last ball was eluding us and performance wise I would have been happy either way."
Â
Freshman midfielder
Courtney Coleman (Antioch, Ill.) laced a game-high five shots on the night, as Schneider picked up her first shutout of the season, while tallying seven saves.
Â
Defensively, Schneider and the back line kept the Seahawks scoreless for 102 minutes to pick up their second consecutive blank sheet. With the shutout, Schneider now stands alone at eighth in career shutouts.
Â
The Seahawks saw an early scoring opportunity spoiled when junior back
Alex Guzman (Las Vegas, Nev.) blocked an open net shot. Prior to the shot, Wagner's Jessica Donnelly snuck by Schneider and sent a shot that looked to cross the goal line but was ultimately saved by Guzman.
Â
The River Hawks had their fair share of opportunities in the first half as well, including two crossbars by Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) in the 33rd and 39th minute, respectively.
Â
Despite UMass Lowell holding the edge in shots, 9-6, and corner kicks, 5-2, in the first half, the score remained knotted at 0-0 throughout the first 45 minutes of action.
Â
The home team continued to sustain the majority of possession in the second half. The River Hawk's placed four of the team's six shots on target, but Wagner's goalkeeper Jessica Wilm tallied a handful of saves to send the game into extra time.
Â
63 seconds was all UMass Lowell needed to put the game away. After dribbling to the top of the box, Morrier found a hole 15 yards out and ripped a shot high over Wilm's hands to secure the teams win.
Â
UMass Lowell is back in action on Thursday, September 8, as the squad hosts Central Connecticut State for a 7 p.m. nightcap.
