WORCESTER, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell Volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Crusader Classic at Holy Cross Field House. In the early match, the River Hawks fell to Fairfield, 3-1, while defeating host Holy Cross, 3-0, in the final match of the tournament.
The set scores vs. Fairfield were 10-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 16-25. The set scores vs. the Crusaders were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-23.
"I am extremely proud of our team for the amount of passion and grit they showed all weekend," said Head Coach
Resa Provanzano. "We had a few moments of hesitation, but they are playing hard and the chemistry is strong for the second weekend of play. It is great to see every player contribute and step up at different times, which is something we will need all season."
The River Hawks now own a 3-3 overall record on the season, while Fairfield improved to 4-3 and Holy Cross fell to 2-3 on the season. UMass Lowell posted a 2-1 record at the Crusader Classic over the weekend, which also included a 3-2 win against Bryant on Friday afternoon.
In the victory against Holy Cross, junior outside hitter
Masha Yelsukova (St. Petersburg, Russia) totaled a match-high 17 kills with a .294 hitting percentage, while freshman
Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) added another 13 kills with a impressive .600 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Haley Shimon (Des Moines, Iowa) also chipped in with 12 kills in the River Hawk' victory.

Delaney Mendez (Phoenix, Ariz.) amassed 40 assists running the River Hawks' offense. Sophomore libero
Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) registered a season-high 23 digs in the win.
The River Hawks posted at least 14 kills in early set as a team, including 17 kills and a .382 hitting percentage in the second frame.
In the early match vs. Fairfield, freshman outside hitter
Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) led the team with 15 kills and 13 digs. Bell managed another eight kills and Visvardis tallied 20 digs. Freshman setter
McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.) finished the day with 20 assists in the losing effort.
Claybaugh and Visvardis were named to the Crusader Classic All-Tournament Team for their efforts in three matches over the weekend.
UMass Lowell returns to the court on Tuesday, September 6th for a non-conference matchup at Quinnipic. Match time from Burt Kahn Court in Hamden, Conn. is 7 p.m.
