LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's soccer team (6-0-1) extended its unbeaten streak to seven games following a 120 minute, 1-1 draw, against Dartmouth (1-1-3) at Cushing Field on Saturday night.
Â
"Dartmouth is a good team, they're well coached and very organized," remarked Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "I thought our team came out a little sluggish and played tired at times, Dartmouth came in after a whole week off and were well rested and ready to go, and all the credit to them, they're a good squad. We had some chances to go up, and it was a good back-and-forth game between two good teams."
Â
The Big Green took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Matt Greer headed home a Matt Danilack cross from the outside of the 18-yard box. The visitors almost doubled their buffer in the ninth minute but one attempt hit the crossbar and
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) saved the rebound.
Â
UMass Lowell got even on the scoreboard in the 41st minute off a
Carlos Ruiz (East Boston, Mass.) penalty kick goal, that he sent high under the crossbar as James Hickok guessed the correct side but went low.
Â
The guests outshot the River Hawks 16-10, including all four attempts in the extra periods, but could not find a way past Kroll after the opening tally. The Big Green had seven shots on target to UMass Lowell's five, but Kroll stood strong and made a season-high six stops.
Â
After Dartmouth's goal
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) has his free kick saved by Hickok in the 22nd minute, while
Jakov Basic (Zagreb, Croatia) sent a free kick from the edge of the box too high in the 32nd minute. Â Less than 10 minutes later, Basic had a shot knocked aside and gathered the loose ball and was knocked down in the box leading to Ruiz's conversion.
Â
Both teams came out strong in the second half but play settled down as the period drew on, with stats staying nearly equal throughout. Dartmouth's Justin Donawa had a breakaway attempt in the 72nd minute but Kroll came out of his net to make the save of the night. Less than 15 seconds later,
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) had his rocket from 25 yards out go high over the crossbar.
Â
Matt Green led all players with five shots, while Basic led the River Hawks with three. Donawa recorded a game-high three shots on goal but could not beat Kroll on the back line.
Â
UMass Lowell heads south to face Bryant at 4 p.m. on September 21.
