LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team will play its season opener on Thursday, September 1 against Bryant at 7 p.m., in the squad's Break the Record Game. The team will then entertain Wagner on Sunday, Sept. 1, as part of a three game homestand.
Thursday's home opener will feature a UMass Lowell scarf giveaway to the first 100 students in attendance. The River Hawks will be hosting their first annual attendance game, where they will aim to break their previous attendance record.
Looking at UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell (0-1-2) looksto start off its homestand on a positive note, after drawing a loss and a tie in last weeks' action. The River Hawks took their first loss of the season at Quinnipiac, 3-0, on August 23, before battling to a 2-2 tie at Stetson on Aug. 26. Junior forward
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) paces the squad with three points (1g, 1a), while senior forward
Taylor Chianese (Chepachet, R.I.) and sophomore forward
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) have each added one goal apiece on the season, as well. Freshman forward
Maddie Cheney (Bow, N.H.) sits fourth on the team with one point after tallying her first career point with an assist at Stetson. In the net, sophomore
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) holds a 0-1-1 record for the River Hawks, racking up 13 saves and an .813 save percentage, while freshman
Lauren Huff (0-0-1) picked up a career-high seven saves in her first career outing against Stetson.
Scouting Bryant
Bryant enters Thursday's contest 3-1-0 overall and is in the midst of the program's best start in Division I history. The Bulldogs are led by forwards Alison Guilmette and Caitlyn Linden, who have posted one goal and assist a piece so far this year. Goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad owns every decision thus far, recording 27 saves, a .931 save percentage and a 0.48 goals against average.
Scouting Wagner
The Seahawks own a 1-3-0 record after splitting a pair of decisions last week. Wagner snatched their first win of the 2016 campaign with a demanding 5-0 win against Saint Peter's University on Aug. 25, prior to dropping a close, 1-2, loss to Rider on Aug, 28. Forward Megan Fritz leads all Seahawks with six points, after netting a team-high three goals in four games. Goalkeeper Jessica Wilm has seen the bulk of the action in net, holding a .750 save percentage and a 1.67 goals against average, in addition to making 15 saves.
Series History
Thursday's meeting against Bryant will mark the 14th meeting between the two squads, as the Bulldogs hold a slight 6-7-1 lead in the all-time series. The rivalry between UMass Lowell and Bryant dates back to the 1990's, when both universities were Division II participants. Sunday's meeting will register as just the second meeting ever between the Seahawks and the River Hawks, as UMass Lowell's 1-0 victory last season gave the squad the 1-0-0 advantage in the all-time series.
