LOWELL, Mass. – Former UMass Lowell forward Scott Wilson (2011-14) became the third River Hawk player to hoist the Stanley Cup when the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks, 3-1, Sunday night, in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals, in San Jose, Calif.
The 24-year old Oakville, Ontario native scored five goals and six points in 24 games for the Penguins before his season was cut short by a "lower body injury." Wilson was placed on the Injured Reserve List by the National Hockey League club and did not play in the post season. The left wing was one of those credited with helping spark the Penguins second half run that culminated in a Stanley Cup Championship. At the time of his injury, Wilson had just signed a new two-year contract extension with an annual value of $625,000.
Wilson joins former ULowell Chief Craig MacTavish (1977-79) and UMass Lowell goalie Carter Hutton as the only former Lowell players to skate for a Stanley Cup Champion. MacTavish was a member of four Stanley Cup winning teams, three as a member of the Edmonton Oilers (1987, 1988, 1990) and one with the New York Rangers (1994). Hutton played for the Chicago Blackhawks during their Stanley Cup Championship run of 2013.
Wilson is one of six former Hockey East players and one of a record 11 former NCAA players on the Pittsburgh roster. He made his National Hockey League debut on Dec. 2, 2014 in a 1-0 Penguins win against the New Jersey Devils.
Wilson scored 39-goals and 95-points in 109 games during three seasons at UMass Lowell. He was part of two Hockey East Tournament Champions (2013 and 2014) and a regular season title. He helped lead the River hawks to the Frozen Four in 2013. As a freshman Wilson was honored by both Hockey East and the New England Hockey Writers Association as the Rookie of the Year in 2012.
