ORONO, Maine – The UMass Lowell softball team (5-27, 0-7 AE) fell, 8-0, in five innings at America East Conference opponent Maine (13-13, 2-1 AE) in the first game of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore
Kate Mims (West Chester, Pa.) drew a pair of walks to lead the River Hawks at the plate. Molly Flowers went the distance in the circle for Maine to record the no-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

The Black Bears used a pair of extra base hits in the bottom of the first, including a RBI double by Alyssa Derrick, and a River Hawk miscue to take an early, 3-0 advantage.

Junior
Alyssa Hasbrouck (Middletown, N.Y.) and Mims became UMass Lowell's first baserunners of the day with back-to-back walks in the top of the second, but both would be left on. Derrick then plated two more runs for Maine in the home half of the inning with another two-bagger, extending her squad's buffer to 5-0.

Erika Leonard drove in two for the Black Bears in the third to make the score 7-0. Flowers continued to hold the River Hawks hitless in the fourth before Derrick sent a solo homer over the fence in right to give the home team the 8-0 lead it would need to seal the decision in five innings.

The River Hawks and Black Bears return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 9, to wrap up the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
