River Hawks complete 7-6 comeback win against NJIT in overtime

LOWELL, Mass. –
Sophomore attackman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alberta) scored the game-winner just 51 seconds into overtime for his team-leading 20th goal of the season to lift the UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team to a 7-6 comeback victory against NJIT, in its season finale on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex in non-conference action.

UMass Lowell ends its second Div. I season with a 4-12 overall record, while NJIT finishes the year with a 1-14 mark.

Sophomore attackman Corey Highfield (Georgetown, Ontario) tied the game at 6-6 with 1:36 left in the game with a man up goal for the River Hawks. Sophomore midfielder Brandon Luitwieler (Calgary, Alberta) had a great chance with four seconds left in regulation but couldn't connect on the goal.

Sophomore attackman Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) cut the NJIT lead to 6-5 with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter with his eighth goal of the season for the River Hawks. Phillips finished the day with a game-high three points (1g,2a) for the River Hawks.

At halftime, the River Hawks trailed NJIT, 6-4. Freshman attackman Ryan Morrison (Uxbridge, Ontario) and senior attackman Kyle Strong (Groton, Mass.) scored goals for the River Hawks in the second quarter.

The Highlanders got on the scoreboard just 44 seconds into the game on a goal by Aaron Forster. Sophomore attackman Matthew Balter (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) got the River Hawks on the board at the 11:42 mark for his 19th goal of the season, he scored again 10 minutes later to make it a 2-2 contest. NJIT held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Freshman Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) stopped 11 shots in victory for the River Hawks, while NJIT's Nick Marzullo made 17 saves in the losing effort for the Highlanders. Lardieri made a game-saving stop with 27 seconds left in regulation on Forster to send the contest to overtime. UMass Lowell held a 39-33 shot advantage against NJIT.

Strong was the lone player honored on Senior Day for the River Hawks. He is the first graduating senior in the Div. I era of the UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse program.
