Interview
ORONO, Maine – The UMass Lowell (17-22, 5-12) baseball team dropped both ends of its twin bill at Maine (14-27, 4-9) by scores of 8-1 and 1-0 on Saturday at Mahaney Diamond.
Â
"We just didn't play well," said Head Coach
Ken Harring. "It was just one of those days where they took advantage of opportunities we gave, and we didn't take advantage of our opportunities. I tip my cap to Maine, they played really well today, made all the plays and kept us off balance. We're fighting it a little bit, but it's not from lack of effort."
Â
The Black Bears took control of the first game taking a 4-0 after four full innings, with two runs coming in the third.
Â
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) drove in the lone UMass Lowell run in game one with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Â
Maine added one in the seventh and three in the eighth, and the River Hawks loaded the bases in the ninth but could not rally.
Â
Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) went 2-for-3 in the game, with two stolen bases and scored the run.
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) also had two hits.
Â
Game 2
Â
The Black Bears scored the only run in game two with a two-out RBI single in the third inning off the bat of Danny Casals.
Â
In the top half of the frame, Strom stole his third base of the day to set a new career high with 18 this season. UMass Lowell's best chance came in the first inning with the bases loaded and one out, but could not push any runs across.
Â
Steve Xirinachs (San Diego, Calif.) pitched six innings, allowing two of Maine's three hits in the deciding third inning. Maine's John Arel struck out three in six innings of work for the win.
Â
The River Hawks try to take game three tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Nick Kuzia (Seymour, Conn.) takes the mound for the guests.Â
