LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell softball team (10-38) dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings against Boston College (25-21) in the squad's final home game of the 2016 season at River View Field on Thursday afternoon.
Â
"BC is a good team and we knew they would be," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "I wouldn't say we were bad today, but we just needed everything to click and fall our way a lot more than it did."
Â
Freshman
Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) logged the River Hawks' lone hit of the contest. Junior
Lauren Ramirez (Dracut, Mass.) threw the first three innings and took the decision, while freshman
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) came on in relief to finish the last two innings.
Â
The Eagles sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead, but Ramirez forced the visitors to leave the bases loaded. Barker followed with a single to shallow left for the River Hawks' first hit of the day in the bottom of the inning.
Â
UMass Lowell made quick work of the BC side in the second when junior
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) initiated a double play to end the at-bat. In the next inning and a half, the teams combined for four runners left on, including junior
Taylor August (Howell, N.J.) and T. Alcorn, who each drew a walk for the River Hawks, as the Eagles held onto their two-run buffer through three complete.
Â
Boston College extended its margin to 7-0 in the fourth thanks to a five-run rally on four hits. Senior
Alyssa Zinkiewicz (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned a base on balls in the home half of the inning before BC plated one more run in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Tatiana Cortez to help secure the 8-0 outcome in five innings. Â
Â
UMass Lowell maintains a 3-01 edge in the all-time series against Boston College. The River Hawks will wrap up the 2016 season with a three-game series this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, April 30-May 1, at America East foe UMBC.
