LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team fell in a hard fought 9-8 overtime loss against UMBC in America East action on Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex.
With the loss, the River Hawks fall to 3-12 overall (0-6 AE) on the year, while the Retrievers improve to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in America East play. Â
Max Maxwell scored the game-winner for UMBC just 30 seconds in overtime to seal the win for the Retrievers. Maxwell finished the game with four points (2g,2a).
UMass Lowell held a 6-3 advantage at the half, but UMBC came storming back in the second half with four unanswered goals in the last 24 minutes until Phillips' goal with 22 seconds left in the regulation to tie the game at 8-8 and help the River Hawks force overtime. Â
Phillips finished the day a team-high four points (3g,1a), while sophomore midfielder
Brandon Luitwieler (Calgary, Alberta) chipped in with three goals. Sophomore attackman
Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alberta) got a great chance to tie the game with 1:17 left in regulation, but couldn't connect on the shot.
The River Hawks held a 4-1 advantage in the first quarter with two goals apiece from Luitwieler and Phillips. UMass Lowell goalkeeper
Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) made a huge save with 5:35 left in the first quarter on UMBC's Nate Lewnes.
Jack Andrews posted a game-high five points (2g,3a) for UMBC in the win.
UMass Lowell outshot UMBC, 34-25 for the day. Lardieri recorded seven saves in the losing effort for the River Hawks, while Ruston Souder stopped 11 shots in the victory for UMBC. Lardieri made several big saves, including a fourth quarter stop with 5:22 to play on UMBC's Jack Gannon.
UMass Lowell will wrap up its second Division I season on Saturday, April 30
th against NJIT. Game time on Senior Day from Cushing Field Complex is 1 p.m.
