LOWELL, Mass. – Junior
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) went 2-for-3 (.667) at the plate, as the UMass Lowell softball team (8-35) was handed a 5-1 loss in extra innings by Boston University (15-20) on Thursday afternoon.
Â
"I thought we played a great game right up until we went into extra innings," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "We were one out away from getting out it, but we got sloppy and the momentum shifted and BU took advantage. We need to do a better job closing the door."
Â
T. Alcorn also registered the River Hawks' lone run in the outing. Freshman
Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) tallied a hit and RBI, as well. Freshman pitcher
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) took the decision with 7.2 innings of work. Â
Â
The Terriers tested the River Hawks on the base paths in the top of the first, but Mims sent a strong throw to third to catch BU's first runner of the day attempting to steal. T. Alcorn drew a walk in the home half of the inning, starting things off for UMass Lowell, although she was unable to advance.
Â
The pitchers controlled play in the next two innings, as both sides carried a no-hitter through three complete. In the top of the fourth, Jilee Schanda reached on an error and would get as far as third before Talcik got herself out of the jam with a groundout to end the at-bat.
Â
The River Hawks broke the game open in their next trip to the dish, when T. Alcorn and Barker logged the first hits of the day with a pair of double, putting UMass Lowell on top, 1-0. The Terriers earned their first hit of the day in the fifth off the bat of Alexa Ponce, but the home team was able to hold onto its one-run margin.
Â
Both sides registered one hit in the sixth, including a single up the middle by T. Alcorn. The visitors plated their first run in the top of the seventh with the help of a base hit by Moriah Connelly, erasing the difference and forcing extras. The Terriers then scored four runs on five hits in the top of the eighth and retired the River Hawks in order in the bottom of the inning to steal the 5-1 comeback decision.
Â
Boston University now leads the all-time series against UMass Lowell, 11-2. The River Hawks remain at home to host Hartford in a three-game America East series this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, April 23-24.
