LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) racked up a program-high 17 saves but it wasn't enough, as UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (1-10, 0-2 AE) was tripped up 16-5 by UMBC (7-3, 1-0 AE) in America East action on Saturday afternoon.
"The second half was not what we started off playing like," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "I thought we had a very strong first half. It could have been a 5-4 half instead of a 6-3 three half but I thought that 6-3 was still a respectable half time score for a very good offensive UMBC team."
Barretts nine first half saves and eight second half saves were enough to set a new program record for saves in a single contest, 17. Barrett topped her old program record of 14 saves set in 2015.
UMass Lowell pushed through with 26:05 to play in the first half, thanks to an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder
Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) to give the home team the 1-0 lead. The River Hawks won the initial draw control, and posted five shots in the contest before the Retrievers could record one of their own.
UMBC quickly bounced back to knot the score 1-1 with 24:33 let in the half, later notching back-to-back goals for their first lead of the game, 3-1.
Dimodugno was at it again, cutting the squad's deficit to 3-2, notching her second tally of the game and fourth on the year with 16:12 in the half.
The two teams went on to trade goals in the following minutes, first by UMBC on a man down situation, followed by a free position goal from freshman midfielder
Kristina Keith (Exeter, N.H.), to make it a 4-3 score.
The Retrievers held the scoring edge end in the final minutes of the half, as the visitors went on a 2-0 run, to own the 6-3 lead in the first 30 minutes of play.
The second half was taken over by UMBC as the Retrievers opened up play with six unanswered goals to stretch their lead to 12-3. During the 6-0 run, four of UMBC's goals came from Marissa Davey who finished the match with a game-high six tallies.
The River Hawks were able to find the back of the net and break up the Retrievers run, after sophomore attacker
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) made the most of her give-and-go with
Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) with 12:30 left to play.
The visitors tacked on two more just 30 seconds apart as their advantage grew to 14-4.
With 7:43 remaining, Sokol netted the final goal for UMass Lowell, and second of the contest, while freshman attacker
Noelle Lambert picked up the assist on the play.
With time running out, UMBC snagged it's last two goals of regulation as they wrapped up the 16-5 win.
Saturday's contest marked the second meeting between the two conference foes, as UMBC holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. UMass Lowell is back in action on Wednesday, April 6 when the squad hits the road for 3 p.m. tilt at Vermont in America East action.
