LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell softball team (7-33, 0-12 AE) fell, 10-0, against Stony Brook (20-17-2, 9-2 AE) to wrap up their three-game America East series at River View Field in Lowell on Sunday.
"Kudos to the Stony Brook pitcher (Jane Sallen)," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "I don't think in all my years playing and coaching I've ever seen a pitcher no-hit a team twice in one weekend. I feel like we needed to make better adjustments. I also thought we started giving some at-bats away and didn't compete as much as we needed to."
Three different River Hawks picked up one walk apiece in the contest. Freshman
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) started the game in the circle, turning in the first two innings of work, but classmate
Sydney Wash (Suffolk, Va.) and junior
Lauren Ramirez (Dracut, Mass.) were both used in relief.
Stony Brook quickly pulled in front, 2-0, in the first inning with the help of a sacrifice fly by Melissa Phelan and a RBI single to right from Chelsea Evans. The River Hawks were retired in order in their first two chances at the plate, allowing the Seawolves to make the score 3-0 in the top of the third.
UMass Lowell threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the inning, as sophomore
Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) and junior
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) each earned a walk before both advanced on a wild pitch, although they would be stranded there.
Both sides went three-up and three-down in the fourth, but SBU used a pair of doubles by Phelan and Evans in the fifth to create a 6-0 buffer. The Seawolves then added four more runs on four hits in their next at-bat, pushing the margin to 10-0.
Stony Brook now leads the all-time series against UMass Lowell, 9-8. The River Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 17 when they travel to Central Connecticut State for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
