LOWELL, Mass. –
A second half comeback fell short, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse (1-13, 0-4 AE) was nipped, 5-4, in a heartbreaking defeat to Brown (5-7, 0-4 Ivy) on Tuesday night.

"We executed alot of what our game plan was tonight," said Head Coach Carissa Medeiros. "We had a very good defensive effort, particularly from our high attackers on the redefend. After their defense made plays or their goalie made stops we were able to get the ball back, which is something we really talked about. We were looking to scrap it out and fight a little more this game and we did alot of that today."

Five first half goals by Brown proved to be enough, as the River Hawks late rally couldn't dig the team out of a their first half deficit.

The contest saw eight different goal scorers on nine total goals, in addition to an UMass Lowell second half shutout to round out the final 30 minutes of play.

The Bears opened up the scoring tallying three quick goals in the first four and a half minutes of play, including two scores from Zoe Verni. Brown's offense continued to rule the first half, as they tacked on two more goals and jumped out to a 5-0 advantage with just 82 second left in the first half.

With nearly 15 seconds left in the opening half, freshman attacker Kendyl Finnelli (Southborough, Mass.) smashed the River Hawks blank sheet with her fourth score of the season.  Despite the lone goal by Finelli, the Bears carried a 5-1 edge into half time.

UMass Lowell took control coming out of the break, posting three consecutive goals and blanking the Bears in a very exciting second half. Sophomore Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) began the run for the team when she connected with Finelli to cut the visitors lead, 5-2.

The game went on to see 17 minutes without a goal before freshman attacker Noelle Lambert (Londonderry, N.H.) and sophomore attacker Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) netted back-to-back goals to bring the River Hawks within one, 5-4, with 6:30 left in regulation.

The River Hawk's defense got the ball into the hands of the offense one last time with a chance to tie the game. With 35 seconds left freshman attacker Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) blasted an off balance shot that looked to have a chance, but was denied by goalkeeper Victoria Holland who eventually ran out the clock.

Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) picked up six saves in the outing, while Ashley Horan (Methuen, Mass.) had a game-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Tuesday's contest marked the second ever meeting between the two squads, as Brown holds a slight 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. UMass Lowell is back in action on Saturday, April 16, as the team is set to travel to Albany for a 12 p.m. conference match up.
