HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore
Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) and freshman
Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) each went 3-for-6 (.500) on the day, as the UMass Lowell softball team (6-30) went 1-1 at Dartmouth (20-10) on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The River Hawks snapped a seven-game skid and a four-game scoreless stretch with a 4-3 victory in game one. The Big Green then earned an 8-0 decision in six innings in game two.
Â
"I thought we competed well today," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "In the first game, we were able to string a bunch of hits together to score some runs. We competed well the second game, but it just got away from us. Dartmouth is a good team and a split is a good start to the week ahead."
Â
Barker tied a program record with three doubles in game one. She became the first River Hawk to match that single-game mark since 2011 and the fifth to do so all-time. Cooper tallied her first home run of the season, as well. Freshman pitcher
Sydney Wash (Suffolk, Va.) picked up her third win of the year, while classmate
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) recorded her first save before taking the loss in game two.
Â
The River Hawks and Big Green combined for three runners left on in the first inning of game one, including Barker, who doubled to center for the visitors. UMass Lowell was unable to generate any offense in their next two trips to the dish, although sophomore
Kate Mims (West Chester, Pa.) drove a ball to left field for a base hit in the top of the third.
Â
Dartmouth took a slight, 1-0 edge in the bottom of the inning on a RBI two-bagger from Maddie Damore. However, the River Hawks were quick to answer in the fourth, as Barker doubled to get on for Cooper, who sent a long ball over the fence in left to give her squad the 2-1 lead.
Â
The visitors added two more runs in the top of the fifth, thanks to a trio of doubles by junior
Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.), Barker and Cooper. The home team would respond, though, cutting the difference back to just one at 4-3 in the sixth. Dartmouth then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Talcik struck out the final batter she faced to complete the save and salvage the 4-3 win for the River Hawks.
Â
In the nightcap, the Big Green jumped in front, 3-0, in their first at-bat with the help of a RBI single to deep center by Miranda Greig. Sophomore
Samantha McQueen (Ewing, N.J.) logged a base hit to left for the River Hawks' first hit of the contest, but would be left there. Dartmouth also stranded two runners of its own in the home half of the inning.
Â
Both sides went three-up and three down in the third and fourth innings before Dartmouth made the score 7-0 in the fifth with a grand slam from Kassidy Williams. Karen Chaw followed with a RBI double in the sixth to seal the 8-0 walk off.
