LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell (13-14, 3-6) baseball team overcame a 6-0 deficit in the fifth inning to top the Binghamton Bearcats (11-17, 7-2), 8-7, with Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) completing the second consecutive walk-off win with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth, Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.
 
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) started the ninth with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) moved Sharpe to third with a groundout, and on a 3-1 pitch Young sent a fly to short left field and Sharpe beat the tag for the win.
 
"These wins show tremendous character," said Head Coach Ken Harring. "We've been in enough situations this year where we've gotten down early and battled back. We've put up big numbers when we've needed to, and the game turned with Passatempo's two-RBI single that changed the momentum, and allowed us to get to their bullpen. This team has the ability to fight back, and when things are going well you can answer right back, like we did today."
 
The River Hawks took two out of three from the Bearcats, who entered the weekend atop the America East standings with a 6-0 record. The last three home wins for UMass Lowell have come in walk-off fashion, coming back from 5-0, 1-0 and 6-0 deficits.
 
The visitors scored four runs in the second, and tacked on a pair in the fifth for the 6-0 advantage. Binghamton strung together two singles and a double around a pair of walks to build the four-run buffer in the second. 

UMass Lowell responded with three of its own in the bottom of the fifth, capped with a two-RBI single to left field off the bat of Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.). With one out, Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) walked, Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) singled and Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) was hit to load the bases for Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla). The freshman recorded a RBI groundout to break the shutout, and Passatempo poked a single over the third baseman's head.

UMass Lowell added three more in the six to knot the game at 6-6, this time it was Marchena with the big hit, sending a single to center on Nick Gallagher's first pitch to score Prada. Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) started the frame with a single and stole second to come around on Tumosa's sacrifice fly. With Andy Savard (Tyngsboro, Mass.) on third and Prada on first, Consolmagno brought Savard home and Prada went to third, cutting the Binghamton lead to 6-5. 
 
The guests regained the lead at 7-6 in the eighth on a two-out single from Eddie Posavec to score CJ Krowiak. The advantage did not last past the bottom of the frame as Marchena drove in his third run of the day, sneaking a single through the left side to score Prada and knot the game at 7-7.

Kevin Veilleux (Manchester, N.H.) struck out five batters in over three innings of relief, allowing one run. Brendan Long (Naples, Fla.) improved to 2-1, retiring the Binghamton order on 11 pitches in the top of the ninth. 
 
Marchena finished the day with two hits and three RBI, Passatempo drove in two RBI and Prada went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The trio of Marchena, Prada and Strom all stole bases on the afternoon, Strom leading the way with two.
 
Reed Gamache and Paul Rufo each went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI for Binghamton, and Krowiak scored two runs.
 
UMass Lowell is back in action with a non-conference contest at Dartmouth at 3 p.m. on April 12.
