SMITHFIELD, R.I. – A late second half run fell just short as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (1-9) was clipped 11-9 at Bryant (6-3) on Wednesday night.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Barrett (Burlington, Vt.) picked up a team-high seven ground balls to notch her 105th career ground ball, to become the first River Hawk in the history of the program to eclipse the 100 point mark in any statical category.
Freshman midfielder
Kristina Keith (Exeter, N.H.) posted a team-high three goals to record her second hat trick of the season and her fourth multi-point game.
In a first half that saw eight goals, a tied score and an even amount of shots on goal, Bryant carried the slight, 5-3, lead after the first 30 minutes of play.
Bryant's offense drew first, as the home team held a 2-0 lead for the first 17 minutes of play. The Bulldogs took control early, as the squad posted two goals before UMass Lowell's offense could generate a shot on the opposing goaltender.
The River Hawks found a spark from sophomore attacker
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) who came out of an UMass Lowell timeout firing a shot that went just wide. The River Hawks continued to attack the zone, resulting in back-to-back tallies just 33 seconds apart.
Sophomore midfielder
Jenn Guen (Braintree, Mass.) ended the River Hawks dry spell with an unassisted goal at 16:09 in the half. After winning the draw control, UMass Lowell charged down the field where freshman attacker
Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) notched the equalizer, making it 2-2.
In the remaining 14 minutes of the half, the home team rounded out the first half scoring on a 3-1 run. Freshman attacker
Noelle Lambert (Londonderry, N.H.) picked up her first tally of the night after connecting with MacEachern on a two-on-one situation.
The second half opened up with five goals in the first 10 minutes of play, as the River Hawks faced their biggest deficit of the game, trailing 9-5, after the Bulldogs went on a 4-1 run.
UMass Lowell came to find the momentum and went running, thanks to back-to-back goals by sophomore midfielder
Erin Hatch (Billerica, Mass.) and Lambert. Hatch's goal marked her first of the season, while Lambert's was her second of the contest.
Bryant pushed through twice with 5:51 and 4:04 left in regulation, as Jess DeMeo notched her game-high fifth goal, helping to push Bryant's lead to 11-6.
The River Hawks struck quick and fast, putting up three goals with in 73 seconds, to close in on the Bulldogs 11-9 with 1:08. The River Hawks won the last four draw controls of the contest leading to two Keith and one dinger from freshman attacker
Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.)
Wednesday's meeting marked just the second meeting between the two squads, as Bryant owns a slight 2-0 advantage in the all time series. UMass Lowell is back in action on Saturday, April 2, as the team entertains UMBC in an 11 p.m. tilt.
