CATONSVILLE, Md. --Â The UMass Lowell (9-9, 0-2 America East) baseball team dropped their first America East games of the season, falling in both ends of a doubleheader at UMBC (9-10, 3-1) by scores of 10-5 and 1-0.Â
In game one, the River Hawks struck first in the top of the first on an RBI single by
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) to bring home
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) The Retrievers scored the next six runs behind a pair of two-run home runs to take a 6-1 lead after two full innings.Â
UMass Lowell cut the deficit to 6-4 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) started the rally with a single with one out and asvanced to second on a
Andy Savard (Tyngsboro, Mass.) single. Prada singled home Olive, and
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) doubled home Savard and Olive with two outs.Â
Following two more UMBC runs, Olive drove home his first career RBI, scoring
Zack Tower (Auburn, Mass.) on a single in the fifth. The freshman led the squad with three hits in the first game, Prada scored twice and Consolmagno had the two RBI.
Steve Xirinachs (San Diego, Calif.) and Conrad Wozniack battled through a pitching duel in the second game, with the Retrievers breaking through for the only run in the third inning. Xirinachs spread out five hits over six innings with two strikeouts, while Wozniack stuck out five in a complete game shutout.
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) had two of the three River Hawk hits.
UMass Lowell and UMBC complete the three-game series with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
