HAMDEN, Conn. – The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (1-5) threatened a second half come back but fell short at Quinnipiac (2-3), 7-4, on Saturday afternoon.
"I think if we could have found the fire in the first half that we came out with in the second half it would have been a totally different game," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "We are always proud of our girls when they can finish a game strong and come back and fight from a deficit. On the other end, we are looking to start our games a little quicker, and a little more focused and ready to go.
Sophomore
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) had a fantastic performance in the net, recording a season-high 13 saves and a .650 save percentage, allowing just seven goals and tying a program-record for fewest goals allowed.
Offensively, sophomore attacker
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) (2g) and freshman
Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) (1g, 1a) picked up a team-high two points in the contest.
Quinnipiac walked into half time with a 4-0 lead, after blanking the River Hawks in the first 30 minutes of play. The Bobcat's Aileen Carey netted three of the squad's four goals, while freshman midfielder
Kelly Moran (Newfields, N.H.) put a team-high three shot on goal for the River Hawks but couldn't convert for a point.
The River Hawks stole the momentum in the opening minutes of the second half, notching two goals in 27 seconds to cut the deficit, 4-2. Sophomore attacker
Jenn Guen (Braintree, Mass.) got things started for the River Hawks, tallying a free position goal with 27:32 to play in regulation. UMass Lowell added to the score thanks to Sokol, who posted her first goal of the decision.
After seven minutes of scoreless action, Dudley scored the third straight goal for the visitors, as the squad trailed Quinnipiac 4-3 with just under 20 minutes to play.
The two teams went on to trade goals in the next two minutes, after the home team got one by Barrett to go up 5-3. Sokol countered nearly a minute later, with her second goal of the game to bring the squad within one with seven minutes of play remaining.
Despite many offensive opportunities, the River Hawks were outscored, 2-0, in the final six minutes, as Quinnipac added its final two goals to secure the 7-4 win.
Saturday's contest was just the setting meeting between UMass Lowell and Quinnipiac, as the Bobcats hold a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. The River Hawks are back in action, as the squad travels down to Florida for a non-conference matchup at Jacksonville on March 16 for a 4 p.m. tilt.
