River Hawks Take on Vermont In Monday Night Hoops Action

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team wraps up its season series against Vermont, traveling to Burlington for a Monday night clash at 7 p.m.

Looking at the River Hawks
The River Hawks hung tough with the Stony Brook Seawolves throughout the afternoon on February 6, including taking an 8-0 lead and holding the hosts scoreless for the first six minutes of the contest. The Seawolves built up a 45-37 lead in the fouth quarter, but a three-pointer off the hands of Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) trimmed the score to 47-46 with 6:29 to play in regulation. However, UMass Lowell could not find the scoreboard for the remainder of the game and Stony Brook came away with the 60-46 victory. Frase led the squad with 13 points, and Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) chipped in 10. Lauren Parra tied her career-high with 10 rebounds in the effort.

Leading the Flock
The UMass Lowell offense is led by a trio of players averaging double-digits this season. Doucette is controlling the attack with 14.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) is scoring 12.1 points per game with 7.7 rebounds, while Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) is scoring 11.4 points. Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) leads the team from the charity stripe with 46 makes, and Frase has dished out 71 (3.2 Ast/Game) assists to facilitate the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Doucette has 15 blocks and 24 steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 488-of-1221 (40.0%) from the field and 32.7 percent (116-355) from three-point range.

Scouting Vermont
The Catamounts enter the Monday night matchup in the midst of a three-game losing streak, following defeats at the hands of Stony Brook, Maine and Albany. Vermont has only one win, Jan. 27, against New Hampshire (83-63), since defeating the River Hawks in the first meeting. Two players are averaging double-figures at this point of the season, led by Andreana Thomasí 14.5 and Sydney Smithís 10.4 points per game. Thomas also leads the squad with 3.5 assists per game, and Smith is grabbing 5.2 boards with 21 blocks. Candice Wright has recorded 39 blocks. As a team, the Catamounts are shooting 34. 8 percent (454-1303) from the field, and 28.8 percent (134-466) from beyond the arc.

Series History
The River Hawks lead the series 3-3, but fell short in the first meeting this season, 59-51, on Jan. 9.

1000-Point Club
Doucette became the 15th player in program history to eclipse the 1000-point plateau, with a career-high 28 points against Hartford. With 303 points this season, the senior has 1,009 in her career. Doucette has set a career-high with 130 field goals this season, and set a personal best with 313 points scored this season, overcoming her total of 308 as a sophomore.

Always a Threat from Deep
As a unit, the River Hawks are leading the league shooting 32.7 percent from downtown, and are third averaging 5.3 makes per game. Last season, UMass Lowell led the league in three-point shooting with a 33.2 3FG% and averaged 6.8 makes per game.

Balling in the America East
The River Hawks are tied for second in the in the conference with a 73.6 free throw percentage, and in fifth with 11.6 offensive rebounds. UMass Lowell is fourth averaging 59.1 points and shooting 40.0 percent from the field. The team sits in fifth with a rebounding margin of +1.2.

Spreading the Wealth
The River Hawks have had 11 games with three or more scorers in double figures. In three of the 11, UMass Lowell has had four players with 10 or more points.

Controlling the Glass 
The River Hawks have outrebounded their opponents in 15 games, including a five-game streak from November 28-December 9. UMass Lowell held a 41.8 (209) to 33.2 (166) advantage throughout the run.
