HighlightsLOWELL, Mass. – Freshman
Isaac White (Ashland, Ohio) tied a personal best with 20 points to pace the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (8-15, 4-6 AE) in a 91-73 loss against Stony Brook (19-4, 10-0 AE) on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"We faced a very good Stony Brook team today," said Head Coach
Pat Duquette. "I think they're one of the best teams we've faced in our first three years in the America East. We did some good things. I liked the way we played defense for the first 15-18 minutes, and we did well on offense and kept the floor spaced. We did a better job driving the basketball, so I was pleased with that."
Â
White set new career highs with seven field goals and six three-pointers on the day. Senior
Mark Cornelius (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore
Matt Harris (Erie, Pa.) joined White in double figures with 11 points apiece. Redshirt sophomore
Jahad Thomas (Williamsport, Pa.) recorded a team-high seven rebounds, while redshirt freshman
Josh Gantz (Grove City, Ohio) matched a season best with four assists in the outing, as well.
Â
The River Hawks came out firing from beyond the arc in the opening minutes of the contest, using big threes from White and Cornelius to take an early, 6-2 lead. The Seawolves were quick to respond, however, putting together a 14-2 spurt to pull in front, 16-8, with 14:49 remaining in the first half.
Â
Stony Brook maintained at least a six-point margin until junior
Tyler Livingston (Hudson, N.H.) Â drained a long ball and Harris followed with a layup to cut the difference to just one. Gantz then tipped in a loose ball on the team's next trip down the floor to regain the upper hand for UMass Lowell, 21-20, at 7:42.Â
Â
Three lead changes in the next two minutes gave SBU a slight, 27-23 edge with 6:05 to go in the first. Freshman
Logan Primerano (Peru, Ind.) made it a one-possession game once more, but the Seawolves answered with seven straight points to extend their buffer to 34-25 at 1:38. Both sides logged a three-pointer in the waning minutes of the half, as the visitors took a 37-28 advantage into the break.
Â
Stony Brook outscored UMass Lowell, 13-4, in the first three minutes of the second half, giving the Seawolves a 50-32 lead with 16:58 still to play. Livingston and Cornelius tallied jumpers for the River Hawks before SBU scored nine consecutive points to take their largest lead yet, 63-39, at 12:42.
Â
The River Hawks gained momentum when Thomas sparked a 15-4 run that included a pair of threes from White to make the score 67-54 with 9:08 left to play. Despite going 7-for-8 from the line in the next four minutes, the home squad was unable to come any closer, as SBU owned an 83-61 buffer at 4:25. Harris and redshirt freshman
Dontavious Smith (Cullen, La.) helped the River Hawks tally nine of the final 11 points, but the Stony Brook would go on to seal the 91-73 decision.
Â
Jameel Warney led five double-digit scorers for the Seawolves with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Carson Puriefoy chipped in with 17 points and nine rebounds, as well.
