LOWELL, Mass. – Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass.) eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau with a career-high 28 points, and Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) hit a three-pointer with 6.9 seconds to force overtime, but the UMass Lowell (3-18, 0-9) women's basketball team ultimately fell to the Hartford Hawks (9-13, 5-4), 75-70, Wednesday night.

With 1:02 remaining in the third quarter, Doucette drove to the hoop along the baseline and laid in a roller to reach the 1000-point plateau, and bring the River Hawks within 46-43. UMass Lowell carried the momentum, forcing a shot clock violation that led to Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) netting a last second layup to cut the score to 46-45 entering the fourth.

Doucette becomes the 15th player in program history to join the 1,000 point club, and the first in the Division I era and since Bianca Simmons acheived the feat during the 2011 season.

"I'm really happy for Lindsey for getting her 1,000th point tonight, it's a huge accomplishment and she's meant so much to the program and especially to our team this year," said Head Coach Jenerrie Harris. "We were just so happy that we had a chance to celebrate her and she was able to put on a huge performance against a good team. I'm proud of the effort we had, but unfortunately we didn't make enough winning plays at the end to pull this one out."

Along with her career-high on 12-of-18 shooting, the senior finished with seven rebounds and three assists. Hayner added 19 points, connecting on three triples, and Gibbs chipped in 10. Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) and Hayner set personal bests with seven rebounds, and Frase dished out eight assists to tie another career-high.

The trio of Frase, Doucette and Hayner all played over 40 minutes, setting or tying personal bests, with Frase never coming off the court.

Trailing 70-65 in the extra period, Doucette converted a traditional three-point play to bring the River Hawks within two with 34 seconds on the clock. The career night for the senior ended in heartbreaking fashion as her three to tie rattled out and the Hawks hit free throws to ice the game.

Before Hayner continued the night, Doucette set her career-high going 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 62 seconds remaining, giving the River Hawks the 60-59 lead. Hartford's Kelly Douglass hit her fourth three of the night to give the Hawks a 62-60 advantage with 56 seconds on the clock.

The Hawks built up a 50-45 upper hand, but Hayner connected on a corner three-pointer with 6:34 remaining in regulation. Gibbs cut the deficit to 55-54 with 3:44 on the clock, and Doucette drilled a triple of her own to knot the score at 57-57 with under two minutes to play. Hartford responded, but Gibbs answered with a layup sending the teams into a 59-59 tie with 1:42 showing.

To begin the night's drama, both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes, with Hartford taking an 8-6 lead into the first media timeout of the evening. Doucette led the way for the River Hawks with four of the team's total. Neither team could find any offense for a five-minute span, and Hayner ended the drought with a jumper from the left wing. Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) handed UMass Lowell the upper hand connecting on a three-pointer with six clicks on the clock, and the River Hawks went into the second quarter with an 11-8 lead.

Hartford opened the second frame outscoring UMass Lowell 10-2 and took an 18-13 advantage, Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) brought the River Hawks within three but Hartford responded with a deep triple to open a 21-15 upper hand with 4:16 until halftime.

Doucette and Hayner cut the deficit to 21-19 with 72 seconds on the clock, with Hayner adding a buzzer-beating three to send UMass Lowell into the locker room trailing 25-22. The duo led the River Hawks' offense in the first half, with the junior netting nine and Doucette adding eight.

Hayner became the first player for either team to enter double figures, hitting a jumper just over two minutes into the half, cutting the score to 31-26. Doucette joined her minutes later, bringing the River Hawks within 35-28.

The Hawks were led by three players in double-digits, with Janelle Harrison dropping 22 and dishing out a team-high four assists. Douglass finished with 16 and La'Trice Hall added 12 points. Harrison also led the quests with five rebounds and four assists.

UMass Lowell shot a season-high 58.5 percent (31-51), and held Hartford to 25-of-56 (44.6%) from the field. The Hawks converted 17-of-27 free throws, while the hosts only connected on 2-of-4 opportunities from the charity stripe.

The River Hawks continue their second trip through conference play, traveling to Stony Brook for a 7 p.m. matchup on February 6.
