CATONSVILLE, Md. –
Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) led a trio of players in double-digits, but the UMass Lowell (4-21, 1-12 AE) fell to the UMBC Retrievers (15-10, 6-6 AE), 68-52, Sunday afternoon.

Mitchell-Owens tied a career-high with five three-pointers and finished with with 15 points. Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) and Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) finished with 12 points apiece, marking the 13th game this season that UMass Lowell had three or more players score double figures.

"We allowed two players to beat us," said Head Coach Jenerrie Harris. "We knew what they were capable of doing and we couldn't stop them, it's one thing to know it but it's another to stop it. I thought that we had some good production from a couple of our posts in Oda and Kayla, but we had too many turnovers and that hurt us."

The Retrievers built a 28-15 advantage with 6:08 remaining in the half, but the River Hawks responded with a 13-2 run over a five-minute span, cutting the deficit to 30-28 with 1:20 left. The run was sparked by Gibbs dropping eight points to lead UMass Lowell with 10 at the half. Mitchell-Owens capped the scoring with her third three-pointer of the opening 20 minutes. UMBC regained a little composure and didn't allow any more points in the frame, and went into halftime holding a 35-28 lead.

Hayner registered her 500th career point in the second quarter, and chipped in seven. After a slow start, UMass Lowell shot 57.1 percent (12-21) from the field and 4-of-8 (50%) from beyond the arc in the first half.

Mitchell-Owens tied her career high, connecting on her fifth three in the third and Hayner added a triple of her own and the River Hawks cut the deficit to 49-42 with less than three minutes to go in the frame.

The River Hawks dished out 18 assists as a team to tie the best performance this season, with six coming off the hands of Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.). UMass shot 44.7 percent (41-47) from the field and hit 8 three-pointers.

Taylor McCarley and Pandora Wilson led the way for UMBC, scoring 30 and 28 points respectively. Wilson also grabbed 12 rebounds, while McCarely dished out eight assists. The Retrievers shot 28-of-62 (45.2%) from the field and went 10-of-13 from the free throw line, compared to UMass Lowell's 2-of-5.

The River Hawks return to the Tsongas Center for Senior Night and Play 4 Kay on February 17, taking on the New Hampshire Wildcats at 7 p.m.
